Upper Dublin High School -Nolan Popper - For initiating the student Chef program for Upper Dublin with his nutritional creation of “Philly Flatbreads”. Thank you Nolan for showing that nutritional meals can also be tasty meals that students will enjoy.  Old favorites like pizza can always be made with more nutritional homemade ingredients and still remain a favorite.  We are looking forward to some new and nutritional items for the Upper Dublin Breakfast program as you work in the UD kitchens for your senior community service project.  Thanks again for helping to promote good nutrition in the UD cafeterias!   To read more about this great project click here.

Sandy Run Middle School – Mr. Andrew Shank and Miss Kaylee Wilkins - For incorporating Nutrition into a class project.  Thank you, Mr. Shank, for utilizing a suggestion from student, Kaylee Wilkins, for an innovative way to promote healthy eating.  Thank you, Kaylee, for wanting to find a way to get kids interested in healthy eating choices. Mr. Shank’s eighth grade art classes made large sculptures of healthy food items at the request of 13 year old Kaylee Wilkins, as “ a fun way to get people involved and thinking about what they’re eating in school.”  Thank you Kaylee, Mr. Shank and the eighth grade art students for working as a team to promote good health! Jarrettown Elementary- Jonas Andrulonis, 2nd Grade Student – Promoting healthy eating at school using his own creativity. As part of his Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” project, Jonas incorporated his desire for serving healthy foods at school in a creative and thoughtful way.

Jarrettown Elementary- Miss Tamra Carroll, Mrs. Stephanie Fagan – For continuing to support non-food choices for party celebrations in their 3rd grade classrooms. Thank you for implementing the necessary adjustments in classroom parties as per the new wellness regulations. For Valentine’s Day, thanks for taking the initiative to show that limiting sweets, does not mean limiting fun.

Sandy Run Middle School – Mrs. Linda Woodland -For implementing fruit as an option to students during advisory. Students are now offered, for 50 cents, a choice between apples and bananas for a snack during advisory on a monthly basis.   Thank you Mrs. Woodland for not only offering a healthy snack choice for the kids, but also sending a great nutritional message.

Sandy Run Middle School – Ms. Frances Schwabenland- For using nutritional ideas incorporated in every day lessons.   In Ms. Schwabenland’s critical reading class, she has incorporated teaching what components are included in a nutritional breakfast while studying what foods make the brain work best.  Thank you Ms. Schwabenland for showing how easy it is to incorporate a little nutrition into the everyday curriculum.

Upper Dublin High School - Mrs. Kimberly Schuler- For using nutritional ideas incorporated in every day lessons.   In Mrs. Schuler’s Sports Medicine class, she uses a fruit bowl to illustrate a lesson in distal and proximal “the apple is distal or proximal to the pear”.  Thank you Mrs. Schuler for showing how easy it is to incorporate a little nutrition into the routine curriculum.

Jarrettown Elementary- Miss Kristy Richter-Initiating ”Dragons Digest” a take home packet that provides nutritional information and fun activities.  Thanks Miss Richter for helping to educate the kids on smart food choices during your physical education classes and reinforcing the message with a take home packet called “Dragons Digest”.

Jarrettown Elementary- Miss Tamra Carroll, Mrs. Stephanie Fagan-For continuing to support non-food choices for birthday celebrations in their 3rd grade classrooms. As parents of growing children, we appreciate the reinforcement of alternatives to the frequent birthday “treat” celebration including a list of suggestions for non-food birthday “treats”.

Jarrettown Elementary- Mrs. Beth McGonagle and her husband Gene -Promoting healthy snacking on their E-mailer  for Ambler Flower Shop.  As the subject line read “A is for Apple”, when you read the actual email there was a section written by their 10 year old son highlighting all of the benefits of eating an apple.  Thanks to the entire McGonagle family for helping to promote good nutrition.

Jarrettown Elementary- Mrs. Lois Tewksbury- Introducing “Eat Well Wednesdays”, where kids bring in healthy snacks to eat  on Wednesdays and discuss the various foods brought in  and even share with other children.

Fort Washington Elementary-Ms. Francis Dunzee, Mr.Thomas Ryan and Principal Mr. Bill DelCollo-Starting the first Upper Dublin District Garden project.  This was a joint effort by teachers and the principal to obtain a grant to start a garden at their school.  This garden will be used in a variety of ways to include food source as well as education.
Congratulations to this team for starting what we hope to be the first of many district gardens.
